Dental Implants

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?
If you have lost/removed/missing tooth and you desire a fixed tooth as replacement of the missing tooth you may get the same by fixing dental implants. Similar to a natural root of a tooth an artificial root made of ‘titanium’ is fixed in the bone. This artificial root is called ‘Dental Implant’.

WHAT IS AN IMPLANT MADE OF?

A dental implant is a tooth root placed in the gums, made of high bio-compatibility Titanium Alloy with surface treatments which gets bonded biologically with the gums and the jawbone allowing rigid fixation. The highly noble characteristics lead to easy adaptation in the human body.

WHERE ALL CAN IMPLANTS BE USED?

  • Fixed teeth replacement for a single missing tooth

  • Fixed teeth replacement option for 2 or more teeth.

  • Fixed teeth replacement option in a patient for all the missing teeth.

  • Semi-fixed dentures (implant retained over-dentures) with push button mechanism.

ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS RIGHT FOR ME?

You may qualify for dental implants if you have missing, broken or severely decayed teeth and are you are  in relatively good overall health. The only way of determining if implants are right for you, is to schedule a consultation at Sneha Dental Care to identify whether you have adequate bone support and healthy gums  that will support the new tooth structure.

ADVANTAGES OF GETTING DENTAL IMPLANTS

Implants have amazing benefits:

  • Reduced bone loss

  • Improved function and comfort

  • Improved dental hygiene

  • No need to remove any healthy tooth structure

  • Significantly better chewing efficiency

  • Improved speech

  • Improved self esteem and confidence.

  • No need of adhesives or creams.

WHAT INVESTIGATIONS ARE DONE BEFORE PLACING THE IMPLANTS?

  • A thorough study of patient’s dental and medical history

  • Routine blood reports

  • Digital OPG and dental scan reports

  • Plaster study model of patient’s teeth

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR PLACING A DENTAL IMPLANT?

The placement of dental implants is a multi-step process.

  • It begins with a surgical procedure during which the area is locally anaesthetised, followed by opening of gums and drilling sequence of 3-4 drill burs.

  • During the procedure multiple X-ray examinations are done to confirm the position and angulations and finally implant is tightened in the bone.

  • The gums are sutured shut over the implant, where it will stay for several months while it heals and begins fusing with the surrounding bone.

  • Due to the nature of implant placement and its average procedure time of between 1 and 2 hours, you’ll be sedated and/or anesthetized for the duration of the treatment.

  • At the conclusion of the healing period, you’ll return to be fitted for permanent crowns and have them placed.

WHAT IS A FLAPLESS /STITCHLESS IMPLANT PROCEDURE?

This is the latest patient friendly technique in which the tissue is not cut, so no sutures need to be taken. Instead a direct punch is used to mark point in bone followed by sequential drilling and implant placement. Thus there is fast post operative healing and no post operative infection. Thus the patient can easily resume his work.

WHAT AFTER PLACEMENT OF IMPLANT? CAN TOOTH OR DENTURES BE IMMEDIATELY PLACED? IF NOT, FOR HOW LONG I HAVE TO BE WITHOUT TOOTH?.

  • Depending on clinical and  X-ray evaluation it is decided whether to proceed as single stage implant procedure or multi stage implant procedure.

  • In most situations if the patient is medically fit (non-diabetic, no heart surgeries in past) and the clinical and radiographic evaluation favours the implant can be loaded with the artificial tooth.

  • In multistage process, the implant is not immediately loaded but an interim prosthesis or denture can be given or 3-6 months and then after the waiting period is over final prosthesis is delivered.

IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL? AND WHEN I CAN RETURN BACK TO MY WORK?

The implant procedure is done under proper anaesthesia, thus it’s a painless procedure. The patient is prescribed certain set of medicines which includes painkillers and antibiotics. These medicines control the slight discomfort and pain that may happen after surgery.

Generally patient is advised rest on the day of the surgery and may resume normal work routine. Only precaution is to be careful and avoid strenuous exercises for 2-3 days. The amount of time required varies from case to case as per patient’s health status.

EATING AFTER DENTAL IMPLANT

It is possible to eat all varieties of food after the implants thus improving the psychological well being and confidence of the person. In addition it improves the patient’s digestive functions and thus results in overall correction of health.

CLEANING AROUND DENTAL IMPLANT

  • Like any other tooth, the implant crown also needs to be properly  cleaned and flossed so that it doesn’t lead to food accumulation and inflammation around the implant.

  • Prescription mouth rinses can further help in keeping the implant healthy. Electric tooth brushes can be used, at times professional cleaning should be done so as to keep the implant healthy.

  • A proper periodic check up of implant should be done, so that if any problem can be handled as early as possible.

TYPICAL SUCCESS RATE AND LIFE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

The success rate of dental implants is almost 90% over a 10 year period.

HOW LONG DOES THE DENTAL IMPLANT LAST?

Implants once properly fused with bone must last for lifetime, but due to several reasons implant may fail at times, or the superstructure (crown /prosthesis) placed over it may fail.

FAILURE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

Similar to a natural tooth becoming loose and/or mobile, a dental implants can also become mobile. Similar to the treatment carried out for a mobile tooth a dental implants can also be treated. Similar to a natural tooth requiring removal, a dental implants may also require removal. Dental Implant requiring removal is called Failure of dental implants.

RETREATMENT OF FAILED DENTAL IMPLANTS

A failed dental implants can be retreated without much discomfort.

FOLLOW-UP AFTER FIXING DENTAL IMPLANTS

In most cases normal follow-up as required for patients without any dental treatment is enough. In few cases wherein an earlier follow-up is required the same would be informed by the concerned Implant dentist.
