Teeth Cleaning/Scaling

Teeth cleanings are essential not just for clean teeth, but a healthy mind and body as well.

WHAT IS TEETH CLEANING?

Teeth cleaning is part of oral hygiene and involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities (dental caries), gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

WHAT IS A DEEP CLEANING?

A regular cleaning focuses on the surfaces of the teeth and between teeth above the gum line. During a regular cleaning, the teeth are also polished. A dental deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is needed in order to remove bacteria, calculus (tartar), and debris that has collected under the gum line

CAN A DENTIST REMOVE TARTAR?

Plaque that is not removed can harden into tartar, a hard mineral deposit that forms on teeth and can only be removed through professional cleaning by a dental professional. When this happens, brushing and cleaning between teeth become more difficult, and gum tissue can become swollen or may bleed

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR TEETH CLEANED?

  • Plaque can be removed by brushing, flossing and dental cleanings. Gum disease, which starts with built-up plaque, is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. As gum disease advances, plaque moves further down the tooth where it can destroy the supporting bone in your jaw, causing teeth to loosen and fall out.

  • If we don’t get the teeth professionally cleaned the plaque, calculus would accumulate on the teeth leading to the ideal conditions for the bacteria to thrive thus leading to more destruction of gums and supporting structures.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO GET YOUR TEETH CLEANED?

  • If you have good oral hygiene habits and a healthy mouth, your dentist and dental hygienist will probably suggest professional teeth cleaning at least twice a year.

  • Cleaning leaves your teeth feeling smooth ,fresh and clean which is nice when you run your tongue against the teeth.more importantly it restores your smile, your self esteem as you smile again confidently without the fear of showing ugly teeth and gums .

Proper care of the toothbrush is also critical to effective oral hygiene. Patients should follow these instructions for caring for their toothbrush:

  • Thoroughly rinse the toothbrush with running water.

  • Do not share toothbrushes; keep them separated in holders.

  • Store in an upright position and air dry. Putting toothbrushes in cases or otherwise covering the bristles creates a moist environment that can promote the growth of microorganisms.

  • Replace toothbrushes (or the head of an electric toothbrush) every 3 to 4 months or when the bristles become frayed or splayed. Worn bristles have been associated with tooth wear
